Heroic dog shot in the head searches for forever home

This pup took a bullet for his owner — and now he needs someone to rescue him.

Kiko, a 14-year-old pit bull mix, protected his former owner from a robber at their Staten Island home back in 2012 — getting shot in the head when the thug tried to break into the house. But despite his heroic actions, the pup’s handler had to give him up when he lost his home a year ago.

Now the cute canine, who still has a scar above his eye where the bullet ricocheted off his skull, is on the hunt for his forever home.

Mighty Mutts, a no-kill volunteer animal-rescue organization based in the East Village, is helping Kiko live the rest of his life with a loving owner. He’s a regular at the group’s weekly Union Square adoption drive and even has his own Instagram page with more than 200 followers.

A photo of the deaf dog posted Friday informed his social-media friends of his adoption protocol: Since he is an older dog, Mighty Mutts wants the prospective adopter to have a home with no other pets and minimal steps. He also needs a place that’s close enough to the city so the shelter can do a home inspection.

“I am currently in a foster home where I am being spoiled with belly rubs and treats and hugs and kisses,” the caption says. “I can stay there until I finally meet the right humans to adopt me.”

Kiko also loves sticking his head out of the car window and snacking on big bones.

“Kiko loves riding with the wind in his hair,” his foster mom wrote on Instagram Saturday.

And while he is mostly known for being a rule follower, Kiko enjoys begging for food once in a while.

“Helping mom cook aka waiting for scraps,” read a caption of a photo of him posted a week ago showing him resting right underneath a cutting board covered in chopped tomatoes.
