Patapsco Valley State Park

410-461-5005 The park sprawls along the Patapsco River, and offers woods and streams for all kinds of recreation. Campsites are available.

Size: 12,699 acres

Directions: In Baltimore, Howard, Carroll and Anne Arundel Counties. Patapsco has five separate recreation areas: The Glen Artney Area is reached via South Street from Route 1 in Relay; the Hilton Area is reached from Rolling Road, south of Frederick Road in Catonsville; the Hollofield Area is adjacent to Route 40 in near Ellicott City; the Pickall Area is reached by taking North Rolling Road to Fairbrooke Road to Johnnycake Road; and the entrance to the McKeldin Area is off Marriottsville Road.

410-477-0757 This Chesapeake Bay waterfront day use park, is rich in history and natural resources. The Defenders' Trail, used during the War of 1812, goes through the park; and the park is the site of the old Bay Shore Amusement Park. A portion of the park has been designated as a state Wildlands area.

Size: 1,310 acres

Directions: In Baltimore County off Old North Point Road in Edgemere.

Hart-Miller Island State Park

410-592-2897 Hart-Miller Island State Park is located on the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of Middle River and is accessible only by boat. The western shore of the island offers safe mooring, wading and access to a 3,000-foot sandy beach.

Directions: In Baltimore County waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Gunpowder Falls

410-592-2897 Gunpowder Falls features numerous scenic areas in the Gunpowder River Valley. There are more than 100 miles of trails including the Northern Central Railroad Trails and four excellent trout streams, as well as a tidal fishing area. Park areas include the Hereford Area, along York Road in Parkton; the Northern Central Trail which extends from Ashland to Maryland Line; the Sweet Air Area which is reached via Route 152 and Green Road; and the Hammerman Area which is located in Chase near Eastern Avenue. The Hammerman Area offers swimming in the Chesapeake bay and the Dundee Creek Marina offers boat rentals, slip rentals and boat launching facilities.

Directions: In Harford and Baltimore counties, along the Gunpowder River Valley.
